This is an interesting opinion piece from the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. There are a number of important elements at play here, particularly relating to our continued importance of oil and natural gas. No one is denying the need to develop alternative energy systems, rather it acknowledges our current reality that we are going to need to develop unconventional fuel sources.
For me one of the most important statements in this article is this one:
But progress still needs to be made in ensuring that the highest environmental and safety standards are adopted and complied with.
This is where all stakeholders need to work together to make sure that we produce, distribute and consume resources in a responsible fashion.
